All I heard as the doors closed behind me was the doctor say they were losing her. Mirage was dying, that couldn’t be right. She was just telling me she loved me. Looking at me with her doe shaped eyes, infatuated with the kid. And then, something went wrong. It had to be the fucking doctors. Everything was fine. I slammed my fists against the hard tiled wall, not even noticing the pain I felt. I looked around in confusion and noticed the two burly bodyguards standing across the hall watching me. Everything happened so fast. I didn’t even understand how I ended up outside of the room. I couldn’t lose Mirage; she was all I had, her and the baby.

I turned to head back inside. If she heard my voice, she would be ok. I would make sure she fought. I didn’t make sure my sister fought, but I wasn’t making the same mistake twice. “Sir, you can’t go in there,” one of the guards called out as the second one lunged at me. I felt his thick hands grab my arm and pull me back. Automatically, I began fighting him back. I knew how to kill a man with my bare hands but just in case, I had my gun. I turned and slammed him against the wall so hard his eyes rolled into the back of his head. I hope I aint kill his ass, I didn’t have time for that right now.

The second guard backed up with his hands up, fear written on his face. “Listen, there will be more of us if you go in there, then the police. I know you are scared for your girl, but if you go in there and disturb the doctors, it could be worse for her. I’m sure she needs you more here waiting then in a jail cell.” I laughed and it came out low and gravely. Wasn’t this brilliant? The fucking rent a cop was trying to talk me down, give a nigga like me advice. Maybe he thought I had daddy issues. Reaching for my gun, I was going to take care of him before I rushed inside, but then the door swung open, hitting me in the shoulder.

The doctor stood there with blood all over his surgical scrubs and a look I couldn’t read on his face. “We were able to bring her back and she is stable, for now. But she lost a lot of blood and is not awake yet. The next twenty-four hours are critical.” He turned to walk away like that was it. Fuck that! I needed to be next to shorty, make sure she was ok.

“Yo where the fuck she at?” I said, gripping his shoulder before he could leave. He looked up to the weak ass security guard I left shitting his pants like he could help. I swear if this shit wasn’t about Mirage’s life, I would have found this whole scene funny. “Matter of fact, don’t even waste time responding, you can show me to her room.
